Advance degrees have been awarded at the University of Utah since 1894, but it was not until 1917 that all graduate instruction was organized under the auspices of the Graduate Division. Sterling Moss McMurrin (1914-1996), author, scholar and educational administrator, served as U. S. Commissioner of Education under President John F. Kennedy from 1961 to 1962.
